Monty Alexander

(Kingston, Jamaica 6 de junio de 1944), pianista jamaiquino de jazz.

Biografia

A los 14 años ya tocaba en clubes nocturnos de Jamaica con su banda Monty and the Cyclones. En los finales de la década de 1950 logró una gran notoriedad en Jamaica a pesar de su poca edad. En esos años viajó a Estados Unidos y tocó por primera vez con la Orquesta de Art Mooney. Al poco tiempo ya acompañaba a destacados cantantes y músicos de primera categoría como Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Smith o Milt Jackson con quien entabló una amistad entrañable que duró hasta la muerte del vibrafonista fundador del The Modern Jazz Quartet en 1999. Su estilo se destaca por la fusión entre los roots jamaiquinos y el jazz estadounidense clásico, con una fuerte influencia caribeña. Sus influencias más notorias son Wynton Kelly, Art Tatum, Gene Harris y Ahmad Jamal. Su trabajo más popular fue como pianista en el disco Unforgettable de Natalie Cole en el cual se le rinde homenaje al cantante Nat King Cole y que estuvo primero en la lista de éxitos de Billboard en 1991.

ahi fue la primera entrada del Blog de Die Brücke con un disco de una de nuestras bandas favoritas, THE SKATALITES from jamaica.

Para los que no lo conocen aca les dejamos un poco de su historia:

The Skatalites están considerados los creadores del ska y, por tanto, influenciadores del rocksteady, del reggae (ya sea earley, roots...), del dub, del dancehall, y del de sus descendientes musicales que derivan de los sonidos tradicionales de Jamaica.Sus primeras grabaciones de ska datan de junio de 1964.Los miembros originales de la banda obtuvieron su formación musical a partir de los músicos de jazz de la isla Jamaiquina. Por eso, aunque se inspiraron en lo que sonaba en Estados Unidos (principalmente boogie woogie) y los sonidos africanos, la música de The Skatalites y por lo tanto el ska, contiene muchos elementos propios del jazz.Los miembros originales de The Skatalites fueron Don Drummond (trombonista), Tommy McCook (saxo tenor y flauta), Roland Alfonso (saxo tenor), Lester Sterling (saxo alto), "Dizzy Johny" Moore (trompeta), Lloyd Brevet (bajo) Lloyd Knnibb (batería), Jackie Mittoo (Piano y Órgano), Jah Jerry Haines (Guitarra).
